Updating e-mail infrastructure: Exchange 2007 SP3 + Update Rollup 2 + Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010 Rollup 2

Before:

• Exchange server 1 (Exchange 2007 SP2 with Rollup 4, FPE 2010): HUB, CAS, Mailbox
• Exchange server 2 (Exchange 2007 SP2 with Rollup 4, FPE 2010): Edge

Installing Exchange 2007 SP3 I have got the error at last step: “Service “FSEMC” failed to start”. After additional research I identified that Forefront integration must be disabled (I wonder why MS did not mention this in SP3 release notes).

Steps I needed to successfully install Exchange 2007 SP3 + Update Rollup 2 + Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010 Rollup 2 on my Exchange servers:

Exchange server 1:

• Stop the following services:
• FSCController
• Microsoft Exchange Information Store
• Microsoft Exchange Transport
• “ fscutility /disable” from ForeFront Protection directory
• Install Exchange 2007 SP3
• Install Exchange 2007 SP3 Update Rollup 2
• “ fscutility /enable” from ForeFront Protection directory
• Start the following services:
• Microsoft Exchange Information Store
• Microsoft Exchange Transport
• Install Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010 Rollup 2.

Exchange server 2:

• Stop the following services:
• FSCController
• Microsoft Exchange Transport
• “ fscutility /disable” from ForeFront Protection directory
• Install Exchange 2007 SP3
• Install Exchange 2007 SP3 Update Rollup 2
• “ fscutility /enable” from ForeFront Protection directory
• Start the following services:
• Microsoft Exchange Transport
• Install Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010 Rollup 2.

After:

• Exchange server 1 (Exchange 2007 SP3 with Rollup 2, FPE 2010 with Rollup 2): HUB, CAS, Mailbox
• Exchange server 2 (Exchange 2007 SP3 with Rollup 3, FPE 2010 with Rollup 2): Edge
• Exchange 2007 SP3 with Rollup 2: 08.03.0137.000
• FPE 2010 with Rollup 2: 11.0.705.0
